German immigrant who became “ Oatmeal King” of America and the world’s foremost producer of processed cereals. His Cascade Mill built in l876 on the Ohio Canal at North Street was the largest in Akron. He also owned the Empire Mill, the new German Mill and finally the great Jumbo Mill at Broadway and Mill streets. His first big customer was the Union Army. His oatmeal was cheap, easy to ship and easy to store. Orders came in for hundreds of barrels. When the Civil War ended the veterans still bought his oatmeal.
