Rubber or inflated rubber cushioning for wheels. From l900 to l950 as many rubber tires were made in Akron as in all the rest of the world combined. Though Goodrich, Goodyear, Firestone, General and U.S. Rubber were the dominant firms making tires, there was enough business for smaller companies also. One of these was the Swinehart Tire and Rubber Company organized in l904. In its factory on North Howard Street it specialized in solid tires for trucks. All tires for trucks were solids in those days and these solid tires heated up so much under load that truck speeds had to be limited to 15 mph.
