A boat for carrying passengers on the canal. Though some were trim, sleek vessels carrying 50-75 passengers others were merely freight boats with the cargoholds boarded up and windows cut in. Traveled 4mph or up to 6mph if the speed limit was broken. Sometimes pulled by three horses, (instead of mules) driven by a boy riding the rear horse. Some canal boat captains advertised “Cleveland to Portsmouth, 309 miles, in only 80 hours”.
