Wild Turkey

(Meleagris gallopavo) A large wild bird. It formerly ranged wild from southern Mexico to New England and Canada, but now is hardly found north of virginia. It is widely kept in domestication in most parts of the world. It has handsome plumage which the male is fond of strutting with the feathers puffed out and the tail spread. It was a popular food source in the early nineteenth century.
